I am honored to become the newest member of the Goodnow Library Board of Trustees. I look forward to serving Sudbury. I am grateful for the tremendous support from so many engaged citizens. Thank you to each and every one of you for speaking to me about the library. Thank you for donating your time and energy collecting signatures, hosting a yard sign, writing a letter, or holding a sign on election weekend. Thank you for your commitment to Sudbury, and thank you for voting! It takes every one of us to make our democracy work. I can’t wait to get to work for our library and our community.

My name is Natalie Schlegel. I’m running for a seat on Sudbury’s Goodnow Library Board of Trustees.

I want to earn your vote on March 29, 2021!

Watch the LWV Candidates’ Forum to hear my ideas for moving our library forward together!

I will advocate for a library reopening plan with clear targets that balances staff safety, community needs, and state guidelines. A safe reopening is possible now and vital to our community and democracy.

I will advocate for transparent definitions of roles between the Trustees, The Goodnow Library Foundation 501(c)(3), and The Friends of the Goodnow Library 501(c)(3). Independent organizations that exist to benefit the library are priceless. Goodnow’s long-term best interests will be served by rebuilding relations with The Friends.

Our library is vital to our democracy.

Advancing this critical institution won’t just happen.
It takes care and dedication from citizens who will work together.

I will serve

I will ensure the library works for every member of our community. I will work in service of our library’s
vision to be responsive to community needs.

I will bring

As a parent who works full time, I am a voice for working families. As someone who has made a career in cross-cultural understanding, I listen, ask thoughtful questions, and seek context to understand others. I am an exceptional advocate, making me well suited for public service.

I will work cooperatively.

I will build bridges to make the library an inclusive
community hub. I will work with fellow Trustees, the
Library Director, Foundation, Friends, Sudbury town officials, and all stakeholders.

As a library trustee I will:

  • work with fellow Trustees as a team, and collaborate effectively with the Library Director, Foundation, Friends, and Sudbury town officials
  • contribute to library goal setting and provide objective evaluation of progress toward goals.
  • oversee library governance, finance, personnel, service, and community relations

I will support the great asset our library is today, while challenging it to innovate for tomorrow.

My experience and skills will make me an ideal trustee:

  • I am an advocate.
  • I seek to understand all perspectives.
  • I ask lots of questions.
  • I gather input and data.
  • I am a problem-solver and sound decision-maker.
  • I am calm under pressure.

I have 20 years of management and budget oversight in higher education. In my career as Director of International Education at Bentley University, my work is focused on developing students’ global knowledge, cross-cultural understanding, and foreign language skills. I am accustomed to working with diverse stakeholders to achieve our shared educational mission. I will bring the same energy to serving our library and our community.

I am comfortable making difficult decisions and taking ownership for them. My colleagues describe me as a strong advocate who de-escalates emotionally charged situations to solve problems. Leading my department requires balancing conflicting demands of multiple constituencies such as students, parents, administrators and alumni.

“When Natalie provides a rationale for a decision that her audience does not like, she demonstrates patience and grace under fire and an amazing lack of defensiveness. Because of her ability to listen and empathize, I have seen her defuse situations that others may have allowed to get out of hand.”

-A university colleague

I earned an MBA from Bentley University and a BA in Economics and Spanish from Vanderbilt University, and I continue to be a lifelong learner.

I have the passion of an educator
and the discipline of a manager
driven to measure results.

I am pleased to support Natalie Schlegel for a seat on the Goodnow Library Board of Trustees.  All Sudbury residents should feel their financial contributions are welcome, and their efforts on behalf of the library appreciated, no matter which organization they support.   Natalie understands this critical concept.  She will bring a fresh perspective to the mission of the Trustees.

I am confident Natalie Schlegel has the vision, wisdom, and energy to make the Goodnow Library a better institution.
